An AEO strategy makes your business easier for answer engines to understand, trust, cite, and when it fits recommend. Start with buyer questions, make core pages crawlable and direct, add proof and accurate facts, then measure citations, mentions, recommendations, and conversions. AEO does not replace SEO; SEO makes AEO possible.

Customers now ask ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, Copilot, and other answer products which option is best, who can help, and how alternatives compare. Your site must still rank and convert, but it must also be understandable enough to appear accurately inside an answer.

Do not try to force a chatbot to say your name. Give people and answer engines useful, verifiable information. Google calls AEO and GEO common labels for AI-search work but says foundational SEO remains central because its generative features use core Search systems. Google’s official guide is the baseline.

Google’s official guide

1. Define the business outcome before the content plan

AEO is not a content format or a list of “AI keywords.” It is a visibility strategy. Decide what visibility should produce: booked calls for a local provider, trials for a SaaS company, or citations and qualified readership for a publisher.

Separate four outcomes:

  • Cited — An answer uses or links to your content as evidence.
  • Mentioned — An answer names your brand as relevant.
  • Chosen — Your brand is presented as a suitable option for the request.
  • Converted — A visitor takes a meaningful next action.

Citation is not commercial success. A page can be cited for education while a competitor is recommended as the solution. Aim for citations where you have expertise and chosen status where you have a clear fit.

2. Build a buyer question map

Start with the questions that happen before, during, and after a purchase, not only a keyword list. Pull them from sales calls, reviews, support tickets, competitor research, and search data.

Group the questions by intent:

  • Problem: Why is our organic traffic falling?
  • Education: What is AEO and how is it different from SEO?
  • Evaluation: What is the best marketing intelligence tool for a small business?
  • Comparison: ActVox vs. a manual marketing audit: what is the difference?
  • Decision: How much does an AI marketing platform cost?
  • Use and support: How do I turn an SEO audit into a 30-day content plan?

Choose the right page type for each question: a guide for education; pricing, use case, comparison, FAQ, demo, or service page for decisions. Build one strong source page rather than ten near-identical articles.

For ActVox, the map can include AI-search visibility, ChatGPT brand checks, GEO vs. SEO, audit cost, and ActVox vs. an agency audit. Together, they explain the category and support a buyer at different moments.

3. Make the core pages eligible and easy to quote

Answer engines cannot use information they cannot access or understand. Start with public crawlability, correct indexation, internal links, useful titles, clear headings, mobile-friendly pages, and a fast experience.

Google requires a page to be indexed and snippet-eligible in Search before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode; there are no extra technical requirements.

Google’s AI features guidance

On the homepage and important product or service pages, make the offer, audience, problem solved, differentiator, and next action unmistakable. Lead with the direct answer, then offer details, proof, trade-offs, and examples. “ActVox turns a business URL into SEO, AI-search, competitor, local, and content intelligence, then an execution plan” is clearer than “We help businesses grow.”

4. Build evidence around the answer

Answer engines need more than a claim. Add appropriate evidence: named expertise, original data or examples, transparent features and pricing logic, customer outcomes, reviews, methodology, and current company or local facts.

Use structured data where it truthfully represents content: Organization, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQ, or Article, but not as a citation switch. Google says there is no special schema for its generative features. Bing likewise recommends clear headings, tables, FAQs, examples, sources, and current facts.

5. Create coverage without becoming a content farm

Build topical coverage without endless generic posts. Start with questions that influence qualified demand, answer each one fully, and link a category guide to comparisons, pricing, case studies, FAQs, and onboarding.

Treat every review as input for the next page or update.

For a commercial kitchen manufacturer, prioritize custom tables, sink sizing, display counters, delivery areas, certifications, lead times, and completed installations—not generic restaurant-growth posts.

Do not chase artificial mentions, forced chunking, or llms.txt solely for Google AI features. Google says they are not required; create unique, people-first, non-commodity content instead.

Google’s myth-busting guidance

Keep entity facts current across discovery surfaces

Answer engines cannot represent information accurately if your website, business profiles, product feed, and support pages disagree. Review your core facts at least quarterly: category, offer, features, prices, locations, opening hours, delivery areas, policies, authorship, and contact details. Update meaningful changes promptly, then keep internal links and sitemaps aligned.

Where ChatGPT Search is relevant, OpenAI says your public content must be accessible to OAI-SearchBot; check that robots.txt, your CDN, firewall, or bot protection is not blocking it. This is an eligibility check, not a citation guarantee, and it is separate from GPTBot’s training control.

6. Build a monthly measurement loop

Rankings alone cannot manage AEO. Build a monthly scorecard around 10 to 20 priority prompts. Record whether your brand is absent, cited, mentioned, recommended, or inaccurate; the cited sources, competitors, and the proof or page gap revealed.

Pair prompt testing with branded demand, organic performance, referral traffic, engaged sessions, leads, and revenue. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, enabling traffic tracking.

OpenAI publisher FAQ

For Bing and Copilot, AI Performance can show citations, cited pages, and grounding queries. Treat them as directional evidence—not a ranking or conversion score.

Bing explains the limits

A simple 90-day AEO strategy

  • Days 1–30 — Clarify demand and baseline visibility. Deliver a buyer-question map, core-page audit, competitor snapshot, and prompt-test scorecard.
  • Days 31–60 — Fix the foundation. Deliver a rewritten homepage and service pages, proof blocks, FAQs, internal links, and relevant structured data.
  • Days 61–90 — Build answer-worthy coverage. Deliver three to five priority question pages, one comparison or use-case asset, and a recurring measurement review.

For a solo marketer: one buyer question each week, one substantive page or refresh, and one monthly review. Consistency beats a 30-day content binge.

Common AEO mistakes

Do not treat AEO as a replacement for technical SEO; publish generic content without proof; hide the direct answer; make unsupported “best” claims; use schema with vague copy; or measure mentions while ignoring qualified referrals and conversions. One prompt is not an AEO score.

The best AEO strategy is a disciplined way to explain your category, answer purchase-shaping questions, prove claims, and measure whether visibility becomes demand. SEO helps people find your pages; AEO helps answer engines decide whether those pages are useful enough to surface.
